Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Fire Provided England's Ace Leaves Egotism at the Door.
One snub was enough. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to realize that securing World Cup glory demands contributions by the talented midfielder, even if it is equally on the midfielder to blend into the tactical structures and player rankings necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's supportive environment.
The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is a matter of harnessing it appropriately. Skill matters but England understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of the recent team selection. He watched the national side book their place at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He watched the young talent shine as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as the coach discuss appreciating the squad's spirit and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The expectation is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards frightening rivals rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support around the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to drop big names.
“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham just has a competitive streak. It takes a certain edge to reach the heights that he has. We all must support him and build a setting which he can channel that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”
Bellingham dominated most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s final group games against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, how about another talent? Here is another prodigious playmaker requiring coaching. He has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to perform well recently but the boss could not ignore the 25-year-old after how he played in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund recently.
The question, though, is the best way to deploy the various creators at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick another youngster once he recovers from a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's influence in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel making the same mistake if it harms the team harmony. There is room for one No 10, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be through the middle. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at the left side? Or the right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. In my view it suits him best.”
He conceded there are times when the player has not looked himself in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has obvious passion for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's the position, the environment, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing Man City in a certain structure, with a clear task. Believe he profits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defensive duties?”
The manager talked about Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other scoring goals from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue is high.
The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 versus Serbia or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are other options if Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
Meanwhile, it is also a chance to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.
“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a sense of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. It will make a very strong England team into an even better one.
